THAT FEMALE TOUCH : WOMEN IN GOTHIC: EUNICE GAYSON : BRUCE G HALLENBECK

When the Baron returned in The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958),he had another woman to contend with. This time, her name was Margaret Conrad, and she was portrayed by London-born Eunice Gayson, a veteran of television who had also worked for Hammer in To Have and to Hold (1951) and who had appeared in Val Guest's comedy Carry on Admiral (1957), which despite its title, was not a part of Peter Rogers'Carry on series, which would not commence until the following year`

THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN TRAILER

The character of Margaret Conrad was a nurse to the mysterious 'Dr Stein' (Guess who?) in his hospital for 'the poor and needy.' Gayson, of course, would achieve even more everlasting fame in 1962's Dr No when she provided a tuxedoed Sean Connery one of the most famous cues in screen history: 'I admire your luck, Mr…?' she inquiresat a card table. Connery's reply, for the first time, is: 'Bond…James Bond.' She became one of the few actresses to appear in two Bond movies, returning for the following year's From Russia With Love in the same role.

In this case, the Baron's new creation is a far more human and sympathetic one, beautifully played by the expressive Michael Gwynn. As Margaret, Gayson has even less to do than Court had in Curse, but she does serve to advance the narrative when she inadvertently releases the 'creature' from his bonds. She also serves as 'Beauty' to Gwynn's 'Beast,' as the creature Karl finds himself in love with her from afar.

DEADLY SYMPATHY FOR KARL
EUNICE GAYSON AND MICHAEL GWYNN

The self-confessed romantic Terence Fisher is afforded every opportunity by Jimmy Sangster's screenplay to play up the unrequited love element for all it's worth, and he makes the most of it The Revenge of Frankenstein - is one part horror, one part black comedy, one part love story - is high water mark of Hammer's Frankenstein series.

NEWS: ROGUE WARS TO FEATURE DIGITALLY RECREATED CUSHING GRAND MOFF TARKIN

NEWS: AS REPORTED IN MAIL ON SUNDAY TODAY : AUGUST 23RD 2015

As the grim-faced star of countless horror films including Dracula and Dr Frankenstein, Peter Cushing raised life from beyond the grave, But now the British actor, who died in 1994, will be raised from the dead himself.

Cushing, star of many Hammer House of Horror movies, will be digitally recreated in the new Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, which is being filmed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and is due to be released late next year.

In the original 1977 Star Wars, Cushing played evil Grand Moff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star and 'boss' of Darth Vader. In the new film Cushing, who died of prostate cancer aged 81, will be painstakingly brought back to life using the latest Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) techniques.

A source told The Mail on Sunday: 'This is one of the most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever. Cushing is a pivotal plot line as he was the one to create Darth Vader and there's a whole back story that will come out.'

But the film-makers face one particularly tough task – creating Cushing's legs and feet.

When director George Lucas filmed the original Star Wars, he gave Cushing and other Galactic Imperial officers ill-fitting leather riding boots. Cushing complained so bitterly that Lucas let him wear slippers, forcing cameramen to shoot from the knees up or have him stand behind the Death Star conference table.

'They are going through hours and hours of old footage from the horror movies to recreate his legs and feet to produce realistic movements,' said the source. 'It is eerie to see someone who has been dead for so long come to life on a screen.'

CGI has been used before to complete movies when actors have died during production, including when Oliver Reed suffered a fatal heart attack while filming Russell Crowe's Gladiator in 1999.

DR WHO AND THE DALEKS : RELEASED 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of AARU Productions of 'DR WHO AND THE DALEKS' starring Peter Cushing as Dr Who, supported by Roy Castle, Jennie Linden and Roberta Tovey. The film is based on the second serial of the British science fiction Doctor Who television programme, The Daleks, produced by the BBC. Shot in Technicolor, it is the first Doctor Who story to be made in colour and in a widescreen format.

Peter Cushing's portrayal of Dr Who was never intended to form part of the ongoing storylines of the television series. His role in neither this film or sequel, Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD are not considered canon. Elements from the programme were used, however, such as various characters, the Daleks and a police box time machine, albeit in re-imagined forms.

Produced by Milton Subotsky and his partner, Max Rosenberg who formed Amicus Productions in the early 1960's, Dr Who and the Daleks production was managed by an off shoot company AARU, specifically form for the two Dr Who enterprises. The film was at the time, the twentieth biggest British box office moneymaker in 1965.

Good old fashioned family entertainment, from a more innocent time, Dr Who and the Daleks celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the day of it's cinema release in the UK today!

SUSAN DENBERG: THAT FEMININE TOUCH : WOMEN IN GOTHIC : PART FOUR FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN

$

The Baron's most physically perfect creation was undoubtedly Christina, played by the enchanting Susan Denberg, in Fisher's return to the series, Frankenstein Created Woman (1967). Born Deitlinde Zsechner in Bad Polzin, Germany - which is now Polczyn-Zdroj in Poland - Denberg was a gorgeous blonde who had been a chorus girl in both London and Las Vegas.

She was the daughter of Austrian and German parents, having been raised in Klagenfurt, Austria, before making her decision to go into show business. Having adopted the name Susan Denberg, she became the centrepiece of a nationwide contest in America during the production of a film called See You in Hell, Darling, (AKA An American Dream)  in which Warner Bros had offered a $500 prize in a publicity campaign to come up with a new name for the actress.

There were 5,000 entries in the contest, including the bizarre 'Norma Mailer,' but they were all rejected and she remained Susan Denberg.

Acting against such veterans as Cushing, Thorley Walters, Peter Blythe, Barry Warren and Peter Madden, Denberg held her own. Given her relative lack of acting experience - the only other performance she is remembered for is as one of Mudd's Women in a Star Trek episode - she is, in fact, something of a revelation.

FRANKENSTEIN CREATED
WOMAN ORIGINAL THEATRICAL
TRAILER

Although her voice was ultimately dubbed in the film by another actress, Denberg's natural talent shines through. She is just as convincing as the 'crippled' Christina as she is portraying the 'created' one, who receives not a brain transplant, but a 'soul transplant' from her dead boyfriend.

THE UNRAVELING

This was not an easy role for an ingenue, and indeed would have taxed a more experienced actress, but she brings it off with passion and grace. Of course, what made playing the dual roles even more difficult was that Christina, once 'reborn,' was possessed by the soul of a man! In a genuinely disturbing scene, and one which the censor objected to, Christina has the severed head of her lover Hans (Robert Morris) skewered on her bedpost so that she can commune with her - his? - former self.

HEAD IN A BOX!

Later in the film, she carries the head around in a hatbox, and after her final murder - in which she avenges herself upon the last of Hans' three killers - she pulls it from the hatbox andspeaks to it in Hans'voice in a scene reminiscent of the classic ventriloquist sequence in Dead of Night (1945).

CHRISTINA AND HANS

Although publicity photographs for Frankenstein Created Woman featured Denberg in a kind of 'bikini bandage' outfit with Peter Cushing nearby, seemingly proud of his 'creation,' no such scene was in the film. Those who wanted to see 'more' of Denberg had to settle for her Playboy layout, which had already been published in August, 1966.

Unfortunately, the postscript to Denberg's life story after Frankenstein Created Woman was not a happy one. Her drug use caused her to have a nervous breakdown and she made only two more appearances, both on American television, before returning home to Klagenfort. Broadcast interviews of the time show an obviously depressed Denberg alongside her mother. Eventually, fans began to circulate rumours that the actress had taken her own life, but in fact, she still lives in Austria as of this date.

The reputation of Frankenstein Created Woman continues to grow, perhaps in part because of Denberg's 'mysterious' disappearance from public life. The highest praise for the film has come from none other than Martin Scorsese, the Oscar-winning director who chose Frankenstein Created Woman to show as part of a National Film Theatre series of his favourite films. Introducing the movie, Scorsese (who had once considered becoming a priest before he was a filmmaker) said: 'If I single this one out, it's because here they actually isolate the soul, a bright blue shining translucent ball. The implied metaphysics is close to something sublime.'

WHEN VIOLET HELENE BECK MET PETER CUSHING FOR THE FIRST TIME

When Violet Helene Beck...Met Peter Cushing. Mrs Helen Cushing was born, Violet Helene Beck on February the 8th 1905 in St. Petersburg, now Leningrad in the USSR. She was the daughter of a wealthy cotton mill owner and lived a life of luxury with her three sisters and two brothers. When the Russian revolution began in 1917, Helen and her family fled from Russia, settling into England. Fortunately for Helen, she fluently spoke several languages... English, French, Russian, and German, and took a job as a tutor. It was later when taking a job as a chorus girl and an actress, that by chance, in May 1942, she met Peter Cushing, as she was the replacement actress in an ENSA tour of Noel Coward's play, Private Lives.... Upon entering the stage door, she looked up and noticed a man which she described in the fashion:

From the stage door stepped a vision, and my heart skipped a beat. I had never met him, yet I knew, deep in my deepest heart, we had been together before. Tall and lean, a pale, almost haggard face, with astonishing large, blue eyes: on his head an old grey velvet hat, with a hole between the dents of its crown, a jacket beyond description and repair, spotless white shirt badly frayed at the cuffs and collar, a pair of once dark blue corduroy trousers, most of the nap long since worn away through constant wear, down-at heel shoes of grey suede. Later, I was to discover the soles were as worn down as the heels, and had holes as large as half crowns in their centres, also woollen stockings that have never known the comfort of a darning needle. He walked with a slight limp, using an ash walking-stick, the ferrule now a mere useless ring of metal around its tip, on his back a huge and obviously heavy kit-bag, such as sailors use.

There was an aura about this ‘beloved vagabond’. His hands told me he was either a musician or an artist – they reminded me of those drawn by Albrecht Durer – and when he bent over one of mine to kiss it, a faint and quite delightful waft of tobacco and lavender-water hung upon the air. I knew I would love him for the rest of my days – and beyond.”.... Peter Cushing and Violet Helene Beck married and became Mr and Mrs Cushing on Saturday, April 10th 1943.

RAISING HAIR PROBLEMS: THE CHANGING FACE OF COUNT DRACULA : CHRISTOPHER LEE :

$

Hair and actors, for men particularly, can be a sensitive subject. Thinning hairlines for some like, signaled the beginning of a life tied to hiding their thinning locks, with endless spraying and careful combing or gluing down hair pieces and relying on were sometimes not the most convincing of toupees. Yul Brynner celebrated, his head minus hair, it was never a problem. Telly Savalas too, when he got fed up with combing-over the last strands, took to the shaver, and whipped, what he had been holding onto, off ...and never looked back. But for many actors, they believed not having a full head of hair, lessened your chances in casting....

For the majority of his film roles, with the exception of Mycroft Holmes in 'The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes' (1970) It also explains why he had such a weird hair line and bouffant top in 'Risen From the Grave'...and a really good wig in AD 1972 and Satanic Rites...and I think more than one in Dracula 58, in the first close up shot where he welcomes Harker, the hairpiece looks a lot smaller, than in the rest of the film...and in Darkness it had less widows peak. Taste the Blood was maybe too full and his own hair sometimes flopped over his ears, Scars of... was a good one!

With many actors, it's 'the advancement of the years', very few with long careers, ever get away without any some help from a weave or wig. Think Humphrey Bogart, David Niven, John Wayne, all piece wearers on and off screen. To be fair, I don't think this is only or just about vanity. In Christopher Lee's case, early hair thinning, caused a problem and throughout his career, he had to present himself as the person / actor that his audiences recognised. Without his hair, he wasn't the Christopher Lee the public knew. He was Christopher Lee without hair.

Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, were lucky to have 'some' there. In later years, Cushing would whip his into, what could be quite a complicated quiff, that must have been held together with a lot of hairspray... but at least he didn't have to sit for an extra hour while they glued the webbing and pinned a 'rug' down. I think when he first appeared without it, around 1974 and the time of the productions of Shatter, The Uncanny, Earth's Core, The New Avengers... he must have been reviled to be finished with it, having worn toupee and weaves since around 1967...

If you look at some of Cushing's jottings and requests on his scripts, you see his recommendations for particular hair pieces that he had worn in previous productions. Film production companies rarely stocked wigs, depending on the budget, make up men or hairdressers/ wig makers would make pieces to order or from stock, they would be hired. For many years, Cushing had his own personal hair piece, which he might wear in a film and in public. You might remember, when Cushing was pounced on by Michael Aspel for his appearance on This Is Your Life in 1990, he is heard to say, 'It's just as well, I wore my toupee today, isn't?'

In 'THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY', Holmes must prove that a young man found next to the dying, brutally beaten body of his tyrannous bully of a father is not guilty of his murder. NEWS: TWILIGHT TIME RELEASES SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN ON BLU RAY IN U.S : Amicus' only film to feature Peter Cushing, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee gets a Pre-order date of Wednesday, September 30th at 4 pm EST. Release Date: October 13th, 2015.

Some very nice Special Features include: Isolated Score Track / Audio Commentary with Film Historians David Del Valle and Tim Sullivan / Gentleman Gothic: Gordon Hessler at AIP / An Interview with Uta Levka / Still Gallery / Radio Spot / Original Theatrical Trailer.

SYNOPSIS AND QUICK CRITIQUE: A killer is stalking women in London nightclubs and drinking their blood; a jogger wakes up in a hospital bed to find his limbs amputated one by one; and a ruthless psychopath seizes power in a totalitarian Eastern European state. Bewildering and exhilarating by turns, Hessler's adaptation of Peter Saxon's novel The Disorientated Man is an ambitious attempt to drag classic horror stars (Price, Lee, Cushing) and themes (Frankenstein, vampires) into a modern Swinging London of grooving dolly-birds, mauve silk shirts and political paranoia.

It's not entirely successful: the film's obsession with human partition, seen in the limb-lopped jogger, the vampiric Keith's torn-off hand and a freezer full of body parts, has its parallels in a narrative that is so fragmented as to be a near-incoherent patchwork of scenes that fail to make the most of their horror stars (Cushing's role is a cameo, and Lee and Price only meet for a brief confrontation at the climax) or the collision of styles ranging from generation-gap movie through mad science to '60s super-sleuth - as though John le Carré, his mind buzzing with topical events (Gary Powers's spy plane) and ambient fears (organ transplants, cyborg technology), had rewritten Frankenstein as a tribute to Bava's Diabolik (1968).

Our Full review and Full COLOUR STILLS Gallery : HERE

But, as Hessler avoids static camera set-ups in favour of hand-held cameras and rapid edits, even if the film is finally little more than a collection of dissociated set pieces, they're so bizarre and Adrenalin-charged that Scream remains enormously entertaining, trading on such extraordinary sequences as cyborg vampire Keith (Michael Gothard in a wonderful Austin Powers turn - "lovely mover", one of the habitués of the Busted Pot observes as Gothard shimmies to the sound of the Amen Corner) being chased around south London by police and tearing off his hand to escape, all fueled by a jazz score that kicks into high gear at the slightest provocation.

THE CREEPING FLESH: LORNA HEILBRON AND PETER CUSHING'S PLAYING OF PROF HILDREN

$

Peter Cushing commitment to the role of Emmanuel Hildren was as strong as ever, and his professionalism absolute. He still concerned himself with not only his performance, but every aspect of filming. His copy of of the script is enthusiastically annotated with character details and instructions to himself.

'Don't gabble. Don't over act. Don't be conventional absent minded professor' And there, mixed up with notes about hairpieces and how to prepare lab slides are the words, 'Bois''Helen''Us'.

Peter related to me as a father and was tremendously caring and supportive' co star, Lorna Heilbron remembers today.'I played his daughter. He felt that I resembled his wife, Helen, so we had a rather intense relationship where I felt he really lived his part in the film.'

To play the deranged Hildren in the prologue and epilogue, Cushing again sacrifices any shred of vanity - without the toupee, which he wore in practically every film now, his hair is whitend and disarrayed and his cheekbones are strongly emphasisedf with make up. A quavering voice, insisting 'I alone can save the world', completes the impression of the character's tragic mental collapse.

HOW TO TELL IF YOU ARE A UBER CUSHING FAN: ALICE LOPES TRAVELS TO WHITSTABLE

Some of you may remember last weekend I shared with you the lovely story and images of Charlie and Brad's amazing Peter Cushing Themed Wedding in Whitstable...and how we crowned them Uber Cushing Fans! Well, here's another friend and member of our Cushing Community... Alice Lopes from Brazil! Illustraited with her own photographs and in her own words, here is Alice's story. Again we ask the question, Uber Fan? You decide.

'My name's Alice Lopes, I'm nineteen years old and I'm from Brazil. I live in Sao Paulo, where I study Economics. I, like Vincent Price I believe that, "A man who limits his interests, limits his life" so, despite my area of study being so different, I do enjoy literature, films, arts, classical music and so on.'

'I first became acquainted with Peter Cushing in the film "Madhouse" when I was twelve years old. Since then I've been watching his films and interviews, and reading about his life and his career at the wonderful PCASUK facebook page. Madhouse is also my favourite Peter Cushing film, there is something that touches me profoundly. Maybe because it was the first film in which I saw Peter. Maybe due to the whole gothic and mysterious atmosphere, Vincent Price as a tormented character, I love the breathtaking photography, in scene of the murdered girl being carried off into the mists by an unknown man...'

'The Peter Cushing restaurant and Inn was very special. I loved the Peter Cushing items around. The photographs and his watercolours on the walls too. The photograph of Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes! 'A Scandal in Bohemia' is my favourite story. I love the way Watson describes Holmes' thoughts about love. But every single Sherlock story has something special. I also appreciate tv Sherlock series, specially those ones of Peter Cushing's BBC programmes, later Jeremy Brett's too. Basil Rathbone I like very much too.'

'To sit at Peter Cushing's table at the Tudor Tea Rooms, was a strange experience, in a public place, yet to me very personal and touching. Peter's photograph on plaque over the table, looking down. The staff were very friendly. I was able to sit and reflect, this was was my first time to travel abroad, and I definitely loved every single detail about Whitstable. The UK is quite different from Brazil, full of bookshops, museums, parks... And there's much to be explored.'

'Another very special moment. It was very peaceful sitting on the 'Lovers Bench' that was donated by Peter Cushing, on behalf of him and his wife, Helen. This little area is named after Peter Cushing too, 'Cushing's View' and well worth a visit'

'And so, we come to 'the magic place'. I had traveled almost 10,000km, to see it for myself. The home where once Peter and Helen Cushing had once lived. I was so surprised to see outside, it had not really changed, since they had lived there. All of the photographs I had seen. His studio, with the large sloping windows, to let in light when he did his painting. The little white gate, I had seen him stand here in photographs. Now, I was here. And very happy to be. The local people there told me, lots of people come here to visit, to see. And I can see and feel why. It is very peaceful. He physically is not here,... but would you think me crazy if if I said, his smile is! No. 9,000 km is not too far. And will come again. Peter Cushing plus Whitstable equals, Magic !'
