INGRID PITT BRINGS US A THROWBACKTHURSDAY WITH BITE!

She was an actress that appeared in a handful of genre films, but she certainly made her mark! In 1970, she gave us her Marcilla / Carmilla / Mircalla Karnstein in Hammer films, THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, the following year she starred in another Hammer film, COUNTESS DRACULA.

Hot on the trail of those two hits, came yet another 'vampire', even though it was a bite size role in one of the stories in the portmanteau feature, 'THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD' for Amicus films, with Peter Cushing and Jon Pertwee.

In 'THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD' she wrapped up her part quite nicely, with a plot twist and flew across the screen and once again, into our hearts....

ALAN RICKMAN DIED TODAY . . .

The terribly tragic news of the passing of Alan Rickman, has just been announced. Although he never had the chance to work with Peter Cushing, he too was such a kind, talented and gifted man... in 1991 he too played the Sheriff of Nottingham on the big screen in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Until that point there was only one Sheriff for me... Truly Madly, Deeply, Die Hard, Love Actually and the Harry Potter films... a huge lost..

NEWS: Whose Coat, Is That Jacket??! You may remember that we reported on a story about the jacket that Christopher Lee wore as Corrigan in 'The House of the Long Shadows' was coming up for auction?

Well, HERE IT IS! Out of auction and looking very grand in it's show case. "For the moment, it's housed in the "Galerie Werkstatt", a very beautiful and well-frequented venue, art centre and restaurant near Cologne", our friend Gerd Pohl tells us. We applaud and congratulate the mangers of the Gelerie Werkstatt, for making the jacket accessible to the public and fans alike, so often items are whipped up by private collectors, never to been seen again...! I am very grateful to Gerd Pohl for providing us with these great photographs! A happy end to the story....

NEWS: CUSHING WATER COLOURS GO UNDER THE HAMMER

$

A PAIR of paintings by cinema’s master of horror Peter Cushing sold at auction for £1,150. The small watercolours by the Hammer Horror star were discovered on a valuation day at Alveston near Wellesbourne.

Far from terrifying, the pictures depict idyllic landscapes and were painted by Mr Cushing when he was a young man working in a surveyor’s office in the early 1930s, some years before he found worldwide fame on the silver screen. The actor was a keen artist and birdwatcher. His memorabilia has a strong following on both sides of the Atlantic.

Adrian Rathbone, Hansons Auctioneer’s Associate Director discovered the pictures which also included a signed photograph of the star. Estimated to fetch around £500, pre-sale interest from across the globe ensured they far exceeded expectations. They eventually sold to a London based collector.

The next Hansons valuation day in Alveston for pictures, antiques and collectables takes place on Friday January 29 from 1pm to 4pm at The Malt House, The Rookery.

ROGUE WARS: TALKING TARKIN: MORE CASTING SUGGESTIONS

Two more suggestions from friends and followers of our Peter Cushing Appreciation Society Facebook Fan Page

GUY HENRY: An English stage and screen actor, with roles in Rome and John Adams. He appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2 and, more recently, the hospital drama Holby City as the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Henrik Hanssen. In 1987, Henry appeared in the episode 'Rumpole and the Official Secret' from Season 4 of Rumpole of the Bailey.

In the early 1990s, he played the acerbic, demonic Dr Walpurgis in The Vault of Horror, a BBC Halloween special. His make-up was provided by Hellraiser veteran Geoff Portass. Guy also introduced a few series of cult horror films in several BBC One Friday night horror seasons (with a name change to 'Dr. Terror'), with scripted introductions written by horror novelist and film historian Kim Newman. He appeared in the 1996 schools series Look and Read: Spywatch, the BBC's 1996 adaptation of Emma.

In 1998 he made one appearance in the medical soap opera Peak Practice and in two episodes of The Grand. His film credits include appearances in Another Country with Rupert Everett, later in Stephen Fry's 2003 film Bright Young Things (appearing in the poster for it, top left) as Archie, in V for Vendetta as Conrad Heyer, in Starter for 10 as a university professor, in Expresso and as Pius Thicknesse in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2. In 2014 he appeared in the critically acclaimed short film Done In.

Paul Benjamin "Ben" Mendelsohn (born 3 April 1969): An Australian actor, known for his work in the films Animal Kingdom, The Dark Knight Rises, Killing Them Softly, The Place Beyond the Pines, Starred Up, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Lost River. Mendelsohn currently stars in the Netflix series Bloodline, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe nomination.

After several early television roles, including The Henderson Kids, he attracted notice in his breakout film, The Year My Voice Broke (1987), winning him the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Supporting Actor. His next major role was in The Big Steal (1990), and Spotswood (1992) co-starring with Anthony Hopkins; this was followed in 1996 by Cosi and Idiot Box. In 2000 he was in two contrasting films, the Australian Mullet and the Hollywood Vertical Limit. In 2005, he was preparing to play Mark Antony in the Sydney Theatre Company-produced Julius Caesar, and he was in the Terrence Malick-directed film The New World

In 2007, Mendelsohn starred in the third season of the TV series Love My Way and in 2008, he appeared in Baz Luhrmann's Australia and filmed the 10-part Melbourne series Tangle, which premiered on Showcase in 2009. In 2009, he appeared in the American science fiction film Knowing directed by Alex Proyas. The same year, Mendelsohn starred as Ned in Beautiful Kate, directed by Rachel Ward, opposite Bryan Brown and Rachel Griffiths.

In 2010, he appeared in Animal Kingdom, starring in the film as Andrew 'Pope' Cody, a criminal on the run from the law living in the notorious Melbourne Underworld. This role won him many awards including IF Award's Best Actor and the AFI's award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He was also named GQ Australia's Actor of the Year for 2010.

He was selected as one of the entrants to the Who's Who in Australia 2012 edition. In 2012, Mendelsohn played the supporting role of John Daggett in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

In 2012, he appeared in Florence + the Machine's music video for "Lover to Lover". The video was directed by Vincent Haycock. In 2013, he guest starred in the TV series Girls as the father of Jessa, played by Jemima Kirke. In 2014, Mendelsohn joined the cast of Bloodline, a Netflix original from the creators of Damages. The first season premiered on the site on 20 March 2015 and was well received. Mendelsohn's performance on the series has been critically lauded, with IGN reviewer Matt Fowler saying in his review of the first season "Everyone on the show shines...but it's Mendelsohn's lanky, damaged, bitter Danny Rayburn that truly drives the show into harrowing places. Spectacular work that I hope gets recognized come awards season."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY : TELLY SAVALAS

Who Loves Ya Baby?...Today we remember the birthday of the late Telly Savalas. A much loved and larger than life man, on and off the screen. His Peter Cushing connection is his rip roaring performance as the Cossack, Captain Kazan in the 'run-away-train-with-a-monster-and-zombies-onboard' epic from 1972, 'Horror Express'.

It's a film that never stops going up gears through out it's tense 90 mins. When Savalas appears, almost an hour in, it really is full steam ahead! Along with Cushing and Lee, he makes the film a whole lot of fun. Most of us remember him as the lolly sucking cop in the excellent tv show, 'Kojak' and his quick to catch on catch phrase, 'Who Loves Ya Baby?'…… Who loves ya  Telly? Why do and always will.....

ON SET SATURDAY WITH PETER CUSHING : URSULA ANDRESS : BERNARD CRIBBINS AND DAWN ADDAMS

Candid Cushing: Principal photography started on The Vampire Lovers at Elstree Studios on 19th January 1970 The film also used locations in the grounds of Moor Park Mansion, Hertfordshire (This stood in for Styria, Central Europe). The Vampire Lovers was produced on a relatively low budget of £165,227 and was the final Hammer film to be financed with American money. Almost all of the later films were backed by distibutors Rank or EMI. Our onset photograph shows, Peter Cushing and Dawn Addams having a cuddle on the set of Hammer's The Vampire Lovers in 1970.

The principal photography for Hammer films, SHE started in southern Israel's Negev Desert on 24th August 1964, with scenes also shot at MGM's Elstree Studios in London, when Hammer's own home, Bray Studios proved to be too small for the project. SHE was the most expensive film Hammer had made up until this time, mid 1964.

Our REVIEW and GALLERY of SHE can be found:  HERE
TRIVIA: Hammer were pleased with the look of Ursula Andress in the film – she was lit by Harry Waxman, costumed by Carl Toms, with her effects make up provided by master make up artist, Roy Ashton – they found her 'Swiss German' accent off-putting, so had her entire part re-dubbed by actress Monica Van Der Syl. Syl was careful to maintain a slight accent in her dubbing, so as not to throw the film's audience, who may have have been familiar with the way Andress spoke in her recent appearance in the James Bond film, Dr. No.

TV 21 COMIC COMPETITIONS AND DALEKMANIA FROM 1965

$
0
0

We have a bit of a Dr Who thing going on at the facebook fan page today.. so let's continue with that thread and this lovely old ad from TV 21 comic from 31st July 1965. The hight of Dalekmania! I remember having that Dalek badge...and maybe that push along plastic Dalek too. Did any of you own Dalek toys and novelties during the 1960's???

We have posted some of these pages before, but they are such a great example of retro publicity, I often get requests to repost them here or at the facebook Fan Page. Below, the one thing I wanted more than anything else in the Summer of 1965, an Inflatable Dalek of my own....and the Dalek jigsaw puzzle. All of of this was on offer and dangled like a carrot, hanging on the naming of the one thing we pretended to be, in our playground antics at school... the cooler than cool.. RED DALEK!

The children's plastic Dalek costume looks a bit shabby now, but back in the day, Berwick's Red Dalek outfit was the bees knees! These too were often given away in competitions. I guess the absolute dream ticket was to own the suit AND the jigsaw, and to able to piece the jigsaw together, whilst wearing the suit!

And as for the chances of winning one of the THREE much coveted Sugar Puffs Movie Daleks, one could only dream!

It's frightening to think we once sold candy to children in the shape of cigarettes back in the 60's...but we did.. Noddy Sweet Cigarettes, Thunderbirds too...what is also weird is the ingredients on this packet...E- numbers I am sure have been left off, but look at the first ingredient...??? A lump of petrified forest with your candy contraband, sonny??
